Can I fit smaller wheels and tyres to my Skoda Superb II?

My Skoda Superb II Elegance is a magnificent car, fully justifying its name. But tyre wear is heavier than on the Superb I by about 60 per cent. My local dealer tells me that Skoda will not supply a new Elegance - normally fitted with 7.5J x 18-inch 225/40 R18 92Y tyres and wheels - with the SE's 7.5J x 17-inch 225/45 R17 84 W/Y ones, or the S's 7J x 16-inch 205/55 R16 94V ones. My point is that the higher profile tyres on the smaller wheels (whether 17-inch or 16-inch) would be cheaper to replace. Incidentally, in Italy the Superb Elegance is fitted with the 17-inch wheels as standard. I should much value your advice!

The wheels problem is for 'marketing' reasons. There's no reason why you should not buy the smaller wheels and deeper profile tyres. Depending on which engine the car has, the brakes are probably the same. Check that first at www.rarerims.co.uk
