Why are the front 21-inch tyres wearing strangely on our Audi Q7 Quattro?

I bought an ex-demo Audi Q7 3.0 TDI Quattro at the beginning of 2011 from Audi Beckenham. It was registered in Sep 2010 and had around 500 miles on the clock. We have now done 7500 miles, mainly my wife on school runs. We are very happy with the car. However I noticed recently that the nearside front tyre was excessively worn, especially on the outer edge. The tyres are Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 295/35 R21. My wife took the car into the local ATS who said that both front tyres were very worn to the point where they were illegal and recommended replacing them. She expressed surprise and the technician told her that this was not unusual, especially as the school run has many speed bumps. However, I remain very surprised as I thought tyres should last at least 10,000 - 15,000 miles.

The garage changed the wheels just before we bought it to the 21-inch titanium alloys, which I was happy with as these are an upgrade, but these do mark very badly if the kerb is scraped exposing the silver alloy beneath the ‘titanium’ coating. Notwithstanding the choice of car, could you recommend more sensible tyres as replacements?

Ditch the ridiculous 21-inch wheels and switch to standard/SE spec 18-inch alloys with 235/60 R18 tyres. You can probably sell the 21-inch wheels and tyres on eBay because there will always be some blinger somewhere who misguidedly wants them. If you were advised by the dealer to opt for 21-inch wheels then you might be able to see compensation for recommending wheels and tyres "not of satisfactory quality" for motoring in the UK. The threat of a small claims court action over this might be sufficient for the dealer to take the 21-inch wheels in part exchange for 18s, or even swap them FoC.
