Can you recommend a reliable diesel for less than £1000?

I'm looking for a reliable diesel for £1000. Which is the best to go for? I need something that does roughly 50mpg and doesn't brake down very often, if not at all, as I travel a lot.

If you are very lucky you might finds a late 1990s SEAT Ibiza TDI90 within budget, but obviously no one can guarantee no problems with a car of this age, and going for diesel and 50mpg might actually cost you a lot more than going for a basically more reliable, newer, petrol-engined car.
