Should I keep my current Mazda 3 as a secondary family car?

My wife and I are working in the same town so basically we just need one car for commuting, as we're currently driving a 57-reg Mazda 3. Now she's pregnant. Basically we need a bigger car for carrying family (the upcoming kid, and parents sometimes) out about, and a secondary car for my wife's home staying. I have the option to part-exchange my current Mazda 3 for a bigger car and buy a smaller car for about £3000-£4000, or simply buy the bigger car and keep the Mazda 3 as the backup.

Do you really need a bigger car? A Mazda 3 is a five-seater, so you can get a kid seat, both grandparents and you two in it. Obviously the situation would be different if it was twins. But I wouldn't panic now and possibly waste money on something you neither like nor need.
