Is it common for 2006 Ford Focus models to suffer transmission failure?

My automatic Ford Focus is just four years old with 54,000 miles on the clock. Last week I lost all power, the car wouldn't drive properly. The dash showed transmission failure. This car is driven by myself, one careful lady driver, serviced regularly, and it is costing me approx £1500 inc VAT to get it repaired and I am going to write to Ford as I think this is appalling for a four-year-old car. However, having found your website, it would seem it is common fault that Ford is aware of. Can you offer any advice or key words to get help to pay for this repair?

There are lots of problems with the CVT, but not with the 4-speed auto, which I think might be JATCO , same as on a Mazda 3.
