What should we do if our Volkswagen Golf 1.6 has been ruined by the emissions fix?

My father-in-law just had the emissions fix on his Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI. They had it for the day, then the next morning as he was driving the car started smoking heavily. He has taken it back and, after having it for 3 days, told him it's nothing they've done and that he needs his engine remapped. I've read some other questions where others have had problems. I'm just wondered if this was something you had come across or knew who the next person to chase would be if we get nowhere with the dealer.

I don't know what they mean by that. They remapped the engine. But problems with EA189 1.6 TDI are very common after the hardware/software, especially if the engine is high mileage.
