Which small car is capable of long motorway drives when necessary?

I have a Rover 75 and I'm thinking of getting something smaller and more economical. I'm now retired, living in Dorset and I use the car infrequently for a bit of shopping, but half a dozen times a year I need to drive up to London or Lincoln and, maybe next year, a trip around Europe. Therefore I would like something that would be happy to be driven hard on the motorway. Maybe the Ford Ka?

A Ka is basically the same as a Fiat 500, and even the 1.2 is okay on the motorway because its seats are comfortable and the gearing is reasonably relaxed.

Stylish and full of character. Really affordable to buy. Low running costs.
Easy to drive and economical. Based on the Fiat 500 but handles much better. More room in rear than 500.
