Why won't Nissan contribute to a clutch repair on my Pathfinder as promised?

I have a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder and the warranty expired last month. I have had it for 18 months and the clutch has gone. I asked Nissan customer services and they told me to take it to my local Nissan dealer to find the fault. They advised they would check it and that Nissan UK would do the work out of goodwill, but I would have to pay something towards the warranty for the clutch. One week later they still have my car and now they say the clutch has gone but I will have to pay £880 and £400 for a flywheel. My local dealer has told me the clutch has already been replaced but certainly not by me, which means it must have been replaced at about 18 months old. Customer services now don't talk to me and the local dealer are saying I will have to pay the lot.

If the DMF fails within warranty it's the manufacturer's responsibility, but not the clutch. Unfortunately your failure was out of warranty. I'd still push for the promised goodwill contribution, though.
