Best used car for fuel economy?

I'm looking at possibly getting a new(er) car to replace my Mk2 Volkswagen Golf that averages at about 25mpg. I'm looking for an automatic that gets better mpg (at least 40+) for £2500 or less. Any suggestions?

Yes, Toyota Yaris Verso with the 1.3 petrol engine and four-speed torque converter auto. More practical, but questionable looks. A SEAT Atea auto will have a DSG transmission that I don't recommend. And a Dodge Caliber is great big lumpy thing with a VW engine that I don't recommend either.
