Is the Toyota Auris prone to faults?

I've just had my Auris serviced at two years and 17,200 miles old. On collecting the car I was told that it needed a new steering column. The assistant told me "It's ok, Toyota know about it. We normally wait for the customer to tell us, but we've told you!". I think I was supposed to be very grateful at that information. What concerns me is that this is the second major problem (after an accelerator fiasco) in two years and therefore should I be worried that the warranty expires at three years with perhaps more issues to follow?

The accelerator problem was an unnecessary fiasco stirred up by troublemakers. Toyota now keeps its act very clean by volunteering fixes rather than waiting to be ordered to make them.
