Is the SEAT Leon a better buy than the Audi A3?

I test-drove a new model Audi A3 recently. I didn't think it handled better than the Focus to be honest, but what a great engine the 1.4TFSI 122 is. Very diesel-like torque, no nasty lack of pull at really low revs, and goes all the way to 6000rpm. I can't afford a new A3, but might consider a post-2008 Audi A3 or Leon. The little 1.4 seems to have no real problems reliability-wise. I can get a nice low mileage Leon for the price of a well-worn A3.

Agreed. The VAG 1.4 TSI 122 is a nice engine to drive. It had a timing chain problem, now not a problem with later engines, but does not have the induction problems of the twincharger. I don't get much feedback of problems that occur within warranty, but more of those that occur out of warranty. The Leon is the same car as the A3, but about 15 per cent cheaper to buy. Same quality, and Audi even has SEAT build its Q3 in the same factory as the Leon.
