Need a cheap and reliable car for work

I'm after a cheap runabout to use for my daily commute to work (five miles return). I have found two cars, but can you advise which one would make the best choice for low running costs?

1) Mercedes-Benz C200k 2.0 auto, 2003 61k
2) Honda Civic 1.6 SE auto. 2004 (facelift model) 49k

Both cars are the same price and have full service history's thus making this decision more difficult. Which would you buy?

The Honda Civic is likely to be more reliable and use less fuel.
