Are all CVT gearboxes unreliable?

I bought a new Nissan Qashqai in 2013. After 30,000 miles and three years, the CVT gearbox needed replacing. Do all CVT auto 'boxes suffer with such unreliability? Can you recommend a replacement car with a CVT that won't break?

No. Just seems to be the CVTs used in Nissans. Generally very reliable in Hondas and Toyotas. Hyundai and KIA have switched to dual clutch six-speed and seven-speed transmissions with engines up to 1.7 litres; still torque converter with 2.0 litre and 2.2 litre engines. No problems reported. If you have to have an auto, get a Mazda 2, CX2, 3 or CX5, all with the same excellent six-speed torque converter box as the Mazda 6.
