Need a used car for a long commute

I will soon be starting on a new job with an 80 mile commute. I currently own a 2009 Mercedes C180K which gives about 45mpg. I am looking at changing my vehicle to something which gives a justifiable fuel economy; real mpg 55mpg+, makes the drive involved and fun, five seat family car, reliable, safe, not too old, crossover/SUV if available, a badge which retains the value better.

My budget is £11000-£12000. What cars would you recommend?

80 miles a day is 400 miles a week, or 19,200 miles a year doing this 48 weeks of the year. Anything prestigious will suffer massive depreciation and probably require bundles of cash on maintenance and repairs. So what you want is a disposable but economical car perhaps a year old that has already lost 30 per cent of its value. After about three years, a super economical diesel could turn round and bite you with high maintenance costs. Some are more economical than others. Maybe an undervalued Renault Megane 1.6dCi 130. Maybe a Honda Civic 1.6iDTEC. Or maybe go straight for a throwaway new Dacia Sandero 1.5dCi.

I can't decide between the Renault Megane Tourer or the Renault Laguna Tourer. Both are 2009 models. Is one a better buy than the other? Is there anything specific I need to look out for?
