Disappointed in Fiat Panda 4x4 - what should I replace it with?

I am very disappointed with my Fiat Panda 4x4. Although it is a comfortable and attractive car, it is extremely expensive to run (poor MPG) and in the first 16 months of ownership it required two new sets of front brakes due to 'mud'.

I need to replace it with an economical 4x4 to deal with country lanes and occasional snowy conditions as well as my high-ish mileage. I do not want something large or thirsty. What would you suggest I buy?

Suzuki Vitara 4x4. Either the 1.6 diesel 4WD or, preferably, the Vitara S 1.4T 4WD.
