Must I pay £1800 to have my Nissan Micra's power steering unit replaced?

My 2006 Nissan Micra's power steering light has come on, and it has been towed to the garage as it cannot be driven. I have been told that I need to pay £1800 for a new unit. Do you know if I should have the electrics reset or would I have to pay for the new part? Can you recommend someone who can help me please - I live in the Northwest?

£1800 is far too much. Tell the dealer if he can't get goodwill from Nissan towards this you will take it elsewhere. If he can't, find a decent independent in the Good Garage Guide.
