Power steering failure on Vauxhall Meriva

The power steering on my 2004 Vauxhall Meriva has failed. My local garage has examined the car and told me a new steering column is needed. Is this correct?

I have heard that there are other possible solutions such as a replacing the steering angle sensor or torque position sensor. Do you have any information that may help to avoid very expensive repairs?

The car is now 12 years old and probably does require a new electric power steering column. I don't think there is a cheap way out.
