Buying a Nissan Qashqai - petrol or diesel?

I want to buy a new Nissan Qashqai with two-wheel drive. It must be automatic and be reliable as I plan to keep it for at least five years. Which engine will be best for economy and reliability - petrol or diesel?

They don't do the 1.6DIG-T with the CVT transmission, which has a dodgy history anyway. I'd go for the manual 1.6DIG-T or 1.6DCI and avoid the CVT auto altogether. If it has to be auto you might be better off with the Honda HR-V 1.5iVTEC CVT-7 which is no ball of fire but has Honda reliability.
