What is the best used car for a small budget?

My Jaguar X-type was written off and had a poor return from my insurance company so unfortunately I only have a small budget (up to £2000). I am looking to buy either a Volvo V50, S40 or VW Golf Mk5 used car. Please could you advise which would be the best option or should I be looking elsewhere completely?

List of faults as long as both my arms for the Golf MkV, and Volvo S40s and V50s weren't brilliant either. Better a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. The best car in this class was the Honda Civic 2.0 litre Type S that had a chain-cam de-tuned Type R engine and they are within budget.
