Battery light on Ford Focus dash

The battery light has come on my dashboard, then when driving the car the handbrake light also came on (obviously the handbrake is off), then the odometer showed ---- and the speedometer wouldn't move from zero, also my indicators did not work and i couldn't turn the heated rear window light off. Any suggestions as to what has caused this?

Interference with the can bus electrics of a Focus are usually because the oil seal to the speed sensor in the final drive has fractured. Costs about £100 to replace. If the problem continues after that then could be that the alternator diodes have failed and you need a new alternator. The other problem with this model of Focus 1.6 is rainwater sitting in the spark plug valley on top of the engine and that can cause havoc.
