Volkswagen Golf 1.4 TSI or other?

My daughter wants a secondhand car. Her budget is £7000 and she set her heart on a Volkswagen Golf. She is a keen road cyclist so would like to put her bike in back. I have read some mixed reviews on Golf 1.4 TSI namely good, street cred and nippy but bad some timing belt issues leading to costly repairs. Any ideas?

A £7k Golf 1.4 TSI will have a timing chain and there have been problems with these due to inconsistent stamping out of the chain links. Unpredictable whether it will be okay or not.
