Why is my Mazda 5 cutting out?

My Mazda 5 1.6 diesel has started to cut out. The car does a 30-40 mile journey once a week and longer ones once a month. I also use Shell V-Power once a month (there's no garage near), so I would hope it's not the DPF.

The car has now done 38,000 miles and is due a service in 500 miles. The dealer is booked up till the end of next week, so I was wondering if there was anything I could do in the meantime?

Why use Shell V-Power once a month? No point. Why not use it all the time? I think all that's wrong is a bit of emulsified biodiesel is temporarily blocking the fuel filter, as you thought.
