Collision damage waiver insurance - is it worth the extra money?

Is it worth taking out annual personal cover for collision damage waiver insurance on hire cars in Europe to try to avoid rip offs?

Put it this way, I don't. I pay the hire company because they make extra profit out it it and therefore are less likely to find damage on the car when I bring it back. And they have their hands on your credit card, while you have no way of seeking legal redress in another country.
