What are the seller's rights after the vehicle is paid for and taken away?

I have sold a motorhome privately, but the buyer has come back a week later saying the dual fuel water heater is leaking and the gas does not work on it. He claims it will cost over £400 to replace. I had absolutely no knowledge of this problem.

We had the vehicle up for sale at £13,995 and we wanted a reasonable quick sale. He offered £12,000 which we accepted. He flew over from Belfast and collected the vehicle which he drove to Liverpool to catch the ferry to Dublin. He signed a receipt which stated: 'It is understood the vehicle is sold as seen, tried and approved by the purchaser without any representations, warranties or conditions express or implied whatsoever'

I am now being asked to make a contribution toward the replacement and he is saying it is under the Sale of Goods Act. Where do I stand Please?

Unless you are a dealer, the Sale of Goods Act and other consumer legislation does not apply. If the vehicle was sold and in a roadworthy condition but was not, you could be in trouble. Otherwise, all that applies is basic contract law, over which you covered yourself in the wording of the receipt. Law here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/
