Buying a used car - Golf GTI or Civic Type R?

Which would you buy? Golf GTI Mk5 or Civic Type R EP3 for low mileage use with a few long motorway runs with an absolute max budget of £8k?

The Golf is geared at about 25mph per 1000rpm in 6th and the Honda at about 20mph per 1,000rpm in 6th. So though the Honda has by far the better engine, it gets tiring on a long motorway drive. I'd add a SEAT Leon Cupra to your list. Better value and usually better sorted than the Golf.
