Do I need to change the gearbox oil or gearbox in my Renault Espace?

My Renault is mystifying my local Renault garage and various experts. It intermittently looses power and the diagnostic is clear. It is being suggested I replace the gearbox oil at £80/ltr with a total cost of £400, or replace the gearbox at £2000. The car has done 140,000 miles. The engine was replaced at 80,000. Any ideas?
