Fiesta clutch failed after 2 years - should Ford pay for repairs?

My 2012 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi has done 42,000 miles, but now the clutch has gone. Ford has refused to cover this under the warranty, but my local dealer suggested I get the work done and then ask Ford Customer Service for a goodwill gesture, but so far they have refused to give me anything.

The car is less than two years old and although has relatively high mileage for its age I would expect the clutch to last longer than this. Is it normal for a clutch to need replacing so early and what action can I take against Ford to recover the cost?

No, not normal. But dependent on the driver. A determined driver could destroy a clutch in 15 minutes if he wanted to, which is why clutches are not warranted for more then six months. The only reason for Ford to pay would be if a seal had failed and the clutch had been contaminated with oil.
