Would you recommend a Peugeot 106 for my son, who would like to drive to France in it?

My son has just passed his test and wants a good secondhand vehicle for £1000-£1250. He is an adventurous lad and will probably drive it to the south of France and back. He is interested in a Peugeot 106 1.4. It needs to be reliable, obviously. What's your opinion?

The 106 is getting a little long in the tooth now and wasn't particularly reliable when it was new. I'd be more tempted to go for an early Toyota Yaris - they start from around £1000. www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/toyota/yaris-1999/
