Best car for long commuting?

I am looking for a new/used car to cope up with huge commuting. I will be covering 24,000 miles a year and want a car that will have a warranty and not suffer from poor depreciation. What car would you buy?

Ideally, a new BMW 320dED because I averaged 63mpg in one over 8000 miles without making any compromises. But they cost £28,000+.
