Should my son give his credit card details to a motorcycle hire company following an accident?

I read your FAQs about credit hire vehicles but would appreciate further advice. My son's motorbike was knocked over whilst it was parked. The car driver has admitted liability and there is one witness. Her insurance has appointed a claims handler who has offered and put in writing that he will cover the cost of bike hire. However the bike hire company is insisting on my son's credit card details. We queried this and they say it is standard procedure to cover possible speeding tickets and as a bike security deposit. My son could really use this offer but is this another possible scam or shady practice?

Before he gives them anything, check what rate they will be charging for the rental bike, then clear that rate with the insurer who will be paying the bill. Because if they don’t pay it, your son will have to.
