Should I renew my Volkswagen warranty for my 2009 Golf Estate?

I have just received a letter from Volkswagen inviting me to extend the warranty on my 2009/59 Golf Estate 1.9 TDI, now at 46,000 miles. I note under the items covered that the clutch (DMF?) is not covered. Is this because a failure, even at a relatively low mileage, would be classed as 'fair wear and tear'? I have just renewed the cam belt, pulley etc. My inclination is not to go for renewal.

Volkswagen does not commit to cover clutches beyond six months in its original factory warranty simply because clutch life is dependent on how the car is driven. It is possible to destroy a clutch by burning it out in 15 minutes. Other wearing components such as brake discs and pads will not be covered. But no warranty should ever be allowed to invoke a 'wear and tear' clause after failure of a mechanical component. That would make the warranty truly useless.
