Why won't Land Rover help with replacing our engine after it ran out of oil?

My husband bought a Range Rover Evoque a year ago. He was recently driving it when he heard a noise. He called out Land Rover and they found it had no oil in it at all. The engine needs replacing, so it was taken off and we were sent a hire car as the guy who came out checked and no oil light had ever come on. However we then had a call saying its first service was 6000 miles overdue so they would not take responsibility and the hire car has now been taken back too. My husband has the backing of Hatfield Audi in Liverpool as they agree that the fault was with the car and not as a direct result of overdue servicing. I would be interested to hear your thoughts?

Sorry, the car had missed a service by 6000 miles and the implication is also that the oil level was never checked. (It later transpired that the car had not been serviced in 23,000 miles from new.) The oil light would only come on to indicate a lack of oil pressure, not that the oil level was low. Even if you took this matter to court I don't think you would win. Drivers should remember that all engines use oil and to use a litre in 5000 miles is not unusual, so check your oil regularly.
