How can I improve the ride in my Ford Fiesta?

I own, and really enjoy driving, a 2008 Ford Fiesta Titanium (bought about six months ago at Dagenham Motors, Sidcup) fitted with low profile tyres, which are good and fine for ride on decent roads. But unhappily, where I live in the County of Surrey, the potholes are appalling, and if one fails to avoid one of the many, a severe jolt is delivered through the wheels to the passenger/driver. The Ford handbook shows that the 2008 Fiesta Titanium is fitted with 'alloy-16-inch x 6.5-inch 15 spoke wheels and 195/45 tyres'. Can you please suggest how I can improve the ride, even if the low profile tyres have to be exchanged for a more conventional tyre?

Change the wheels to 14-inch and fit with 175/65 R14 tyres that are standard on the Fiesta Econetic.
