What caused the steering to lock and the ESP light to illuminate on our KIA cee'd?

My wife has had a KIA cee’d diesel automatic for about two years without any trouble, but yesterday a strange and potentially dangerous thing happened. She had been driving along the main road at about 50-60mph and then entered a village and dropped her speed to about 30mph. Fortunately the road was straight because the steering locked almost solid. She maintained control and pulled to the side of the road keeping the engine running. The steering remained locked although she could get slight movement on the front wheels. It was then noticed that the ESP light was on, not flashing, although ESP has not been used at all. Touching the ‘ESP Off’ button had no effect. She switched the engine off and then restarted, the ESP light went out and the steering was restored to normal. She finished the journey OK. This was rather a frightening thing to happen and is there a likelihood of it occurring again? I would value your opinion.

I can't understand that at all. Could be a fault with the steering angle sensor that wrongly detected a problem and send a message to the ECU that then 'took control' over the steering. The ECU may have recorded a fault so it is well worth having that checked.
