What is causing a gearbox whine from our 2005 Volkswagen Golf?

We have a 2005 Volkswagen Golf with a gearbox whine. We have the car since 2008, but the whine developed in the last year or so. In your reply to "Whine seller" last Saturday, you inferred that it wasn't unusual, but didn't really say whether we should worry about it. Where we usually have the car serviced say they can't detect the whine, so that was no help. Should we worry?

Probably bearings. What I used to do with VAG boxes was pour a can of STP oil treatment into the box via the speedo drive aperture (you have to be careful not to pull the nylon drive cog off and drop it into the box). It still whined a bit but did not fail and lasted at least 2 years.
