Do winter tyres have additional benefits over runflats?

I decided to fit winter tyres this year, and now use Avons on 16-inch steel rims to replace the original 17-inch runflats on my BMW 3-Series. As expected, grip is great, but there is also a very noticeable improvement in ride quality and a reduction in tyre noise. Most surprising is a reduction in fuel consumption of about 5 per cent, even in these colder conditions. I know you favour runflats on safety grounds, but it seems there is a price to pay apart from just their additional cost.

The ride improvement is from going down a wheel size and putting more rubber between the rims and the road. The fuel economy is because the winter tyres are a bit narrower. I did exactly the same on my Fiat, and have been recommending readers to do the same for three years.
