Which SUV for offroad use?

My V70 Volvo Estate 2WD with the 2.4-litre diesel engine has been very good for comfort, speed when required and carrying my golf gear. I now require 4WD as I attend regular point-to-point race meetings, which involve always parking in long grass fields, possibly muddy and with inclines. Land Rovers in various forms are very common, obviously suitable, but I don't want permanent 4WD and my elderly mother in law couldn't get up onto the seat, so I thought that the BMW X1 would be ideal but it doesn't seem to get good reviews. I would appreciate your opinion about the X1 and possible alternatives please.

The X1 is ugly and not very nice inside, but drives and handles very well. Note that sDrive is 2WD. For 4WD you need xDrive. Many other BMW 1-Series and 3-Series are becoming available with 4WD (test: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/bmw/bmw-1-series-f.../).

If you can afford an F25 X3 4WD, that is the best (but be aware that there is also now a 2WD X3). You also need to think about upgrading to tyres optimised for muddy conditions.
