How to buy a car with no tax disc?

I am considering buying a car from a private seller whose car's road tax has expired. Obviously, it is unwise to buy a car without inspecting and driving it first. What can you advise about how to test drive? Would you advise me not to do so until road tax is renewed?

Either find another car that doesn't have this problem or make a very low offer and take a chance.
