Buying a used estate - what's best?

I need to replace my old Volkswagen Passat diesel estate with something comfortable and reliable. I do less than average mileage and am happy with either a petrol or diesel. Ideally, I want something used and practical. What do you suggest?

For low mileage, petrol is better and cheaper. Much cheaper on repair bills too, but even the 1.8 and 2.0 TSI petrol engines have had a few problems in Audis. Better a Toyota Avensis 1.8i or 2.0i Valvematic.

Hugely practical and robust, refined and quiet on the move, excellent diesel engines, especially the 2.0 D-4D, very reliable.
A better drive and better equipped than the previous Passat. Comfortable and has more status than, say, a Ford Mondeo.
