Petrol or diesel estate car advice?

I am toying with either a 4-5 year old diesel estate (Mondeo/Passat-size) and using it mainly for the long distance journeys for economy, or to go for a Toyota Avensis 1.8 V-matic manual TR in Petrol. What do you think?

Toyota 1.8 Valvematics have been averaging 40.5 for the manual and 38.7mpg for the Multidrive S: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/toyota/avensis-2009/ Not a bad choice. Readers got 36.1mpg from the Mondeo 1.6 EcoBoost estate: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/ford/mondeo-iv-estate...7.
