Buying a medium sized hatchback - which is best for £6000?

I am looking for a small hatchback for my daughter in-law. She lives in London, but wants something with five doors. What would you recommend with a budget of £6000?

For status, a Volkswagen Golf or an Audi A3. For long warranty (maybe still some left) and cheaper maintenance, a Hyundai i30 or KIA Cee'd. For an alternative: a Mazda 3.
