Should I go for a 1998 Mercedes-Benz 250 TD Classic or a 2000 BMW 5 Series?

I have a 1998 BMW 323i SE Touring but it's heavy on juice and my partner can't drive manuals yet. I have seen a 1998 Mercedes-Benz 250 TD Classic with 126,000 miles on the clock on Autotrader. Also, I have seen a 2000 BMW 530d with 160,000 on clock. Both are asking for £2000, both are automatics and are open to p/x, but although I have a BMW at moment I'm not sure if I should stay with BMW or go with the Merc. Can you throw some light on subject?

The BMW sounds like a good deal as the older Mercedes-Benz 250 diesel isn't a very smooth engine compared to the BMW 530d. The extra miles are unlikely to make a big difference on cars of this age and current mileage.
