Can you recommend a used car with good fuel economy?

I’m looking for a quiet and reliable car for long motorway work. I cover 15,000 – 20,000 miles a year. So far I have driven a 2012 Honda Civic 2.2 DTEC and a 2011 2.2 CTDI. I’ve also driven a SEAT Exeo 2.0 TDI, which looks good value. Any recommendations?

Probably 50mpg from the 2.2CTDI and about 45mpg from the 2.2iDTEC, with the possibility of DPF failure. I think you'll be better off with a 1.8iSE petrol. I averaged 45mpg from the 2006-2011 version and 47mpg from the 2012 version. You're right that the Exeo looks good value, but more likely to be trouble and at your mileage will need a new timing belt every couple of years.
