Looking for an automatic family car?

I currently drive an Alfa Romeo Giulietta (Cloverleaf) that is 2 years old. It's not very well built and I would like a car that is automatic (my wife finds them much easier to drive), good for a new family of the plus a dog and won't mind only being driven 6000 miles per year. I'd also like a car that can cope with Midlands snow and has gadgets!

I've been looking at the Volvo V40, but also SUVs as maybe they will be better for the family.
