What's a dual mass flywheel?

What is a dual mass flywheel? What form is it? And exactly what is its purpose?

It's a two-part cushioned flywheel between the engine and the clutch and gearbox intended to reduce vibration fed through to a car's cabin by a Common Rail Direct Injected diesel engine and also to reduce torque reactions on first and second gears, which can be extreme with a diesel engine.
