Which SUV for winter driving in country lanes?

We are retiring to Somerset this year and would like something to tackle the lanes in winter, so we are looking for a 4x4 of some kind. I currently run a SAAB 9-3 estate and would want similar boot space. I am thinking of a Freelander or a Subaru Forester. I would prefer a chain driven cam. We would probably drive enough to keep a diesel clean and not so much as to worry unduly about petrol costs. We have about £15,000 to spend. What would you advise?

By a process of elimination it has to be a Forester 2.0-litre diesel because that is chain cam. Not very easy to find, though.
