What should I replace my Volkswagen Passat with?

My daughter runs a 2007 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 diesel Estate but no longer needs the space and needs to carry two smallish dogs and one husband. She doesn't want to buy brand new and only does 10,000 per annum. She's looking at an Audi A3 Sportback diesel but I think there must be cheaper alternatives?

An Audi A3 Sportback remains strong money because you are buying status. If that's worth £2000 - £3000 of her £10,000 to her, all well and good. But a Kia cee'd or Hyundai i30 are more reliable with longer warranties and will be a lot newer for £10,000.

I'm completely vexed as to what to buy, I've around £5000 to spend on a diesel family sized car. It must have a 1.6-litre engine or less, be reliable and have a good size boot. What do you suggest?
