Audi A1 handbrake failure

We have had an Audi A1 for little over 1 year. On the school run my wife parked on a slight incline less than 3% leaving the car with the handbrake engaged. After 15-20mins the car was seen to roll down the incline for approx. 20ft and collide with another car. The damage is extensive. Audi collected the car for examination however have reported there is no fault with the handbrake and no warranty issue and they are not at fault. At present they are not prepared to do anything. This leaves us having to claim on our insurance.

They pointed to the fact the handbook advises you leave the car in gear. It seems the problem may occur when discs cool and contract effectively releasing the brake. Very very scary and our only good fortune was no children were injured.

As a customer what can we possibly do? I note on other forums the problem is not isolated and seems common with A1s and A3s. Surely they should be saying it is essential the car is left in gear?

The Highway Code has advised leaving parked cars in gear for about 20 years. When did you last read a copy? That said, you are correct in your analysis of what happened, and you might have a case if you wanted to take the matter to court. Meanwhile I'll record what happened in car by car.
