Replacing an Audi Avant?

Have an old Audi Avant. I'm looking for a newer (12 months old perhaps) medium sized saloon/hatch.

I want to avoid DSG gearboxes and electronic/ pedal handbrakes.
I also want a car that has good visibility out of the back window as I do a lot of reverse parking. Cars these days seem to be a triumph of style over practicality and have thick door pillars and letter boxes for rear windows!

Any suggestions for reliable (petrol or diesel) cars 1400cc -2000cc with GOOD rearwards visibility?
