Smaller wheels for winter tyres in a Focus ST?

Hello,

Having reached the ripe old age of 73 I ordered what I would think my last new car, a Ford Focus ST Estate, practical and fun (I hope).

The car will be delivered in November, so I would need winter tyres almost immediately.

Given the cost of 235/40/18 winter tyres and wheels I am wondering if it would not be more reasonable to buy 215/50/17s or even 215/55/16s.

Do you think this is a stupid idea?

First make sure that the smaller wheels will fit around the ST's front brake discs and calipers. I don't think 16s will, but 17s might.
